2012 Tentative Schedule

The 2012 Singlehanded Transpac is the main focus of my sailing this year, but in addition to SHTP, I plan to use many Singlehanded Sailing Society (SSS) races as a tune up. In addition to this, I will be completing my 400-mile solo qualifier, offshore sea-trials and several other local San Francisco Bay races as practice.

January 28, 2012- SSS Three Bridge Fiasco- This is a race that requires sailors to round marks, in any order, that lie next to the three main bridges in San Francisco Bay; the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge and Richmond- San Rafael Bridge. With 300+ boats, no set direction to be sailed, and reverse-handicap starts, the name “Thee Bridge Fiasco” seems quite fitting! 22 nm length.

Result: 8th out 37 starters- Singlehanded Overall. Full ResultsShort Video Clip, and Full Blog with photos

March 17, 2012- OYRA Crewed Light Bucket Race- This is a fully crewed race out to the "Light Bucket", which lies smack dab in the middle of the shipping lane approach to San Francisco. The mark is 13 miles offshore. Total race length about 30 nautical miles. This was US 101's first offshore race and the first time that I sailed 101 outside of the Golden Gate Bridge. A very good day of sailing with myself and two crew.

Result: 3rd out of 12 entries in PHRO2 class, 9th overall out of 44 entries. Full results, Full video and Full blog with photos.

*March 24, 2012- Doublehanded Lightship race. This is a doublehanded race that goes approximately 13 miles outside of the Golden Gate and turns back around. 30 nm length.

Result: DNF- Did not finish. All 16 boats in our fleet DNF'ed. Rain and no wind. Blog entry. Full results and short video to come.

*March 31, 2012- BAMA Doublehanded Farallones- Doublehanded around the Farallones, which is a small group of islands about 26 miles outside the Gate. 56 nm length.

Result: 1st in class, 1st Overall. 58 entries, but only 8 finishers. 50-knot puff in pre-start. Blog entry, full results and full video.

April 7, 2012- SSS Corinthian Race- Singlehanded race around the Bay. Approximately 18 nm length.

Result: 4th in class, 5th overall Singlehanded (Out of 35). Light, variable breeze. Blog entry, full results, and full video.

May 12, 2012- SSS Singlehanded Farallones Race- Singlehanded around the Farallones. 56 nm total length.

Race cancelled due to tragedy in Full Crew Farallones race and subsequent "investigation". RIP Low Speed Chase crew.

Late May- 400 mile solo qualifier. This is a 400-mile solo, non-stop sail that must pass at least 100 nautical miles offshore. This is the required qualifying sail for Singlehanded Transpac entrants. I am planning to do this sail sometime around late March or early April.

June 30, 2012- SSS Singlehanded Transpacifc Yacht Race- This is the focus of this campaign. This is a Singlehanded race from San Francisco Bay to Hanalei Bay, Kauai. The race will start at Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon. 2,120 nm length.

Result: 1st in class, 5th overall (24 boats) Full recap

* denotes that the race is not “firmly” on my calendar. There will undoubtedly be races that I will add or drop from my calendar as time, boat work, and weather dictates. I am planning on completing my qualifier in late March or early April, so the Doublehanded Lightship or DH Farallones could easily end up being dropped.
